Case Studies > Illinois: Former Hospital Facility

The goal of this project was to confirm the locations of buried facilities and update the utility maps at the site of a former hospital. Surveys were performed within and along the street boundaries surrounding the hospital campus. Both the multi-channel GPR system and the multi-sensor TDEM system were used with the GPR system being the primary investigation tool.

Former Hospital Facility

Multiple surveys with the multi-channel GPR system enables the creation of detailed profile views of the subsurface. Two GPR profiles are illustrated in the above figure showing the typical hyperbolic signatures of the buried utilities. The figure below illustrates a plan view of the layout and orientation of several buried utilities. From these views, the precise locations and depths of the utilities are determined.

This project demonstrated in a unique manner the advantages of using the multiple and complimentary probing technologies (GPR and TDEM) built into the UIT system. The use of both GPR and TDEM systems enabled UIT to locate detect and map all buried utilities completely and accurately, a feat no single technology could achieve alone. The above figure shows plan views of TDEM and GPR data acquired along the same street segment. TDEM data easily senses a buried street light power cable at a location where the GPR system was unable to do so. Likewise, the GPR system detected the linear trend of a target that the EM system was unable to resolve.
