Colonie, Ny Residentail Road Intersection

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) selected this site at the intersection of Everett Road and Atrium Drive in Colonie, New York, as part of a project aiming to demonstrate the capabilities of GPR technology. A critical element of the project included development of an implementation strategy for the use of this technology to address pavement needs at the project and network levels as well as the need to identify and map the presence of utilities beneath pavements.

UIT and a Strategic Ally, Spectra Environmental Group (www.spectraenv.com) were part of a team that were charged with surveying the site and locating and mapping underground utilities.

Colonie NY Blueprint

Accurate mapping of the site required a total of 12 survey paths of UIT’s 14-channel GPR array. Six paths were mapped on Everett Road and six additional paths were mapped on Atrium Drive. Each path was 5.12 feet wide, with continuous GPR profiles spaced 4 in apart on each path’s length. Accurate mapping of the site required a total of 12 survey paths of UIT’s 14-channel GPR array. . Data collection, analysis and interpretation allowed subsurface utilities and other features to be identified and mapped. The resulting product included CAD drawings showing plan, profile, and 3D perspective images of utilities buried beneath the intersection. NYSDOT compared the delivered results to its subsurface utility engineering (SUE) records and as-built plans and declared this project a success based on the accurate identification and location of all in-ground utilities.
